Film noir is a genre often enhanced by the shabby, disreputable trappings of the B movie, so it’s no surprise that some of the finest noirs of the studio era were produced at the notoriously budget-conscious Columbia Pictures. This series of eleven dark gems highlights masters of the form, like Fritz Lang (The Big Heat) and Jacques Tourneur (Nightfall), as well as lesser-known filmmakers such as Joseph H. Lewis, who overcame budgetary constraints with a lot of ingenuity and atmosphere.
