DISCUSSION BOARD #2 - Script Coverage: Group 1

Discussion Board Goal:


An essential part of the rewriting process for writers of visual mediums is the ability to both give and receive creative notes. This discussion board will give students experience in both, as well as prepare students for the types of feedback, coverage and development they will receive as professional writers.


Instructions:


From your script coverage assignments sent out last week, ensure you have read the script of the classmate to whom you’ve been assigned and have reviewed the Coverage Guidelines asset you’ve been provided.


For your first post (Due Wednesday night):


As a reader:


1. List the classmate to whom you’ve been assigned and the title of their script. Go on to discuss your notes on their script, per the Coverage Guidelines.
Since these boards may become slightly unwieldy with large classes, please also e-mail your classmate a copy of your coverage.


For your second post (Due Sunday night):


As a reader:


2. Read through the other students’ feedback on the script you covered and comment on points they make, citing why you agree or disagree.


As a writer:
3. Read through your classmates’ feedback on your script. On what points do you agree or disagree? Consider what similar comments you’re receiving from classmates who’ve read your script. Or if, perhaps, any of the feedback are conflicting opinions on the same facet of your story.


4. In your response post, address your classmates’ comments and how you might approach addressing their notes in your rewrite. Be sure to ask for follow-up if you have a question or need clarification on points your classmate made.


Try to not be defensive or argumentative but considerate that, though your classmate may not understand some aspect of your script clearly, that all feedback comes from a response to something. For example, if a classmate comments they didn’t have sympathy for your protagonist, maybe it’s not a page one rewrite of your character but rather that you’re missing a 1st act “Save the Cat” moment.
