Week One: Discussion Board - "Finding a Source" (Due: Aug 8 Status: Not Completed)
Discussion Board Goal:

This three-part discussion is intended to gear your thinking about the types of research your project requires, and help you locate a source to interview for Assignment 11.

Instructions:

1. From the story you have chosen for your final thesis project, brainstorm areas of the script you could research by interviewing an expert. This could be someone who does the same job as your protagonist, a doctor specializing in treating a disorder one of your characters suffers from, or possibly even a primatologist if your main character is a monkey.

2. In your initial post:

• List the five areas you’ve identified for research.
• Tell us why you’re interested in researching each topic.
• Indicate where you would look for experts to interview on your chosen topics.
And...
• How an interview with an expert might benefit your script.

Examples:

• Topic #1: Homeless Shelters. My main character works at one. I could look for a source by contacting local homeless shelters and arranging an interview with someone who works there. Since I’ve never been to a homeless shelter, I’d hope to learn how they operate and what the typical challenges are facing someone who works at one. An interview on this topic would benefit my story by giving me a real-life, in-the-trenches account of what goes down at a shelter.

For your second post,

3. Read your classmates’ posts and contribute some ideas you have to help your fellow writers take their ideas further, or other places they could look for an interviewee.

ie: Topic: Homeless Shelter. You might want to figure out what the different jobs are people do at homeless shelters and see if one of them is more aligned with what you see your character doing. If you can't find a homeless shelter, maybe you could speak to a volunteer at a soup kitchen.

4. Finally, from whichever of your topics you think would most benefit from a research interview, post a third time identifying five potential individuals whom you’ve found contact information for and can request an interview with.
